About
A little bit about the founder and trail builder
Surface was started in 2018 by Dan Black, a University of Utah graduate who got his start in winter terrain parks. In 2011 he helped start and build Canyons Bike Park in Park City, UT. He then moved on to help build Tidal Wave, Twist n Shout, and a few other Deer Valley classics.
After his resort run, Dan started working for an independent trail building company and helped build the system at High Star Ranch. Once the High Star project was complete, the idea for Surface Trails was born…
Surface’s first project was to help build the Fruit Loops trails in Fruit Heights, Utah. Afterwards, we went on to subcontract on projects at Woodward Park City, Eric’s Trail in Herriman, the bike park in Hailey, Idaho, the Bogus Basin Bike Park, the Millcreek Big Water to Elbow Fork trail, and the green trail in the Arcylon trail network. Surface has also built several private “backyard” projects, including pumptracks, jump lines, hiking trail systems, and even ATV/UTV trails. We specialize in MTB-specific trails but we have plenty of experience building trails for all users.
We look forward to working with you
Dan Black
